Advise caller to:
- Make sure that the scene is safe, ensuring that other motorists can see the scene, e.g. Placing hazards on.
- Switch off the ignition of any damaged vehicle
- Ask a bystander to set up warning triangles in both directions, advice the person to watch for other vehicles while he / she is doing this.
- Watch out for any dangers such as traffic; make sure that no one smokes anywhere near the accident.
- Traffic accidents may be complicated by spillages of toxic substances or vapors, Keep bystanders away from the scene and stand upwind of the vehicle.
- HAZMAT (“hazardous materials”) signs on the back of the vehicle indicates that it may be carrying a dangerous substance, stay clear and give the details to the emergency services.
- Give an accurate account of the number of victims involved in the accident and the state of each victim.
- If any victim is conscious and bleeding, should not be moved but assist with pressure support on the wound if possible with any available material.
- Any unconscious victims should not be moved at an accident scene, but pulse and breathing should be checked if not present Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) should be commenced.
- If there is a pulse and victim is breathing, victim should be assessed every 2 minutes while waiting for the ambulance.
