Victim is Hanging or being Strangulated

• Sometimes, hanging or strangulation may occur accidentally — e.g. Neck tie, Clothing becoming caught in machinery ETC
• Hanging may cause a broken neck

Advise caller that:

• Quickly remove any constriction from around the victim’s neck.
• Support the body while you relieve the constriction.
• Be aware that the body will be very heavy if he / she is unconscious
• If conscious help the victim to lie down while you support his head and neck.
• If victim is unconscious place the victim on the floor, assess for a pulse and breathing
• If no pulse is present and victim is no breathing start Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
